Plans to combine Holy Cross Primary and St Joseph’s College into a Multi-Academy Trust

Further to our letter of 13 July 2017, and to the article in the Swindon Advertiser on 14 July 2017, Mr Hughes and Mr McAteer announce plans to combine Holy Cross Primary School with St Joseph’s Catholic College from September 2017.

We have submitted an application to the Department of Education to combine St Joseph’s Catholic College with Holy Cross Primary School into a Multi-Academy Trust. As Mr McAteer retires from his position as head of Holy Cross at the end of the summer term, from September 2017 Mr Hughes will become Executive Head of both Holy Cross Primary School and St Joseph’s Catholic College.

The geographical proximity of the two schools, our shared ethos and mission in the Catholic faith, plus the fact that Holy Cross is an important feeder school for St Joseph’s, provide convincing reasons for the schools to join together under one Trust.

There are other substantial benefits associated with our application to become a Multi-Academy Trust, which many Catholic and non-Catholic schools around the country are also pursuing.

These include:

  • Pooled resources to achieve economies of scale

  • More strategic planning by governors

  • Shared accountability for constant improvement in pupil attainment

  • Shared thinking and best practice between school leaders

  • Improved staff retention and succession

  • Richer curricular and extra-curricular activities

  • Shared professional development resources

The integrity and traditions of each individual school will be respected and upheld, and there will be no change to the name of either school, the timing of the school day, admission arrangements or term dates.

From September the current Deputy Head of each school will become Head of School, responsible for the day to day academic and pastoral life of the school, and will be the first point of contact for parents.

Our schools are on the cusp of an exciting new era. We thank Mr McAteer for his dedication to Holy Cross and its pupils and we wish him a very happy retirement.
