St. Joseph's Catholic College teaches Maths to all students from Year 7 to Year 11, as well as providing A-levels in Maths and Further Maths.

The primary aim of the Maths department is to develop the mathematical knowledge, skills, concepts and strategies of every pupil to the maximum possible level, including providing the pupils with the mathematics they need for every day life and for other school subjects, and to provide where appropriate, a foundation for further study. Pupils will be made aware of methods of investigation and given an insight into the development of mathematics and the power of mathematics as a language. This is an essential development in the analysis and communication of information and ideas.

More generally, the department aims to contribute to the development of the pupils' personal qualities of curiosity, cooperation, self-expression, self-evaluation and aesthetic appreciation. Pupils should be able to work independently and cooperatively, and to experience the enjoyment and satisfaction which results from achieving success in mathematics.

The College follows the National Curriculum, which splits KS3 and KS4 Maths into number, algebra, ratio, proportion and rates of change, geometry and measures, probability and statistics.

Course Outlines

KS3 Maths is taught as part of a spiralling curriculum, where students will revisit and extend topics throughout the year. All students will be taught through a variety of learning styles within these various modules, supporting the use of mental and written methods of calculation. Reasoning and problem solving mathematics will form part of each unit and students will be encouraged to also learn how to use a calculator and ICT appropriately. Students will be grouped appropriately to support their learning. Regular assessments of pupil's progress will take place and allow for easy movement between groups.

KS4 GCSE Maths has been revised for first teaching in September 2015 with first certification in June 2017.

GCSE Mathematics

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. The programme of study for key stage 4 is organised into apparently distinct domains, but pupils should develop and consolidate connections across mathematical ideas. They should build on learning from key stage 3 to further develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge wherever relevant in other subjects and in financial contexts.

How could it help with my future?

Your Maths GCSE is highly valuable in the workplace, opening up opportunities for many different career paths such as architecture, banking and finance, business consultancy, engineering, game design, health and medicine, IT and computer science, psychology, science, teaching and many more.

How will my work be assessed?

The end of course assessment takes the form of three final exams. Each is of length 1½ hours with the first being a non-calculator paper. The terminal exam can either be taken at higher or foundation tier.

For students who find Maths challenging there is also an Entry Level Certificate which can be completed during Year 11, alongside studying for the GCSE. This is internally assessed.
